Mechanical Butterfly Sculpture

All > "Art" > Sculpture > Mechanical Butterfly Sculpture by jesse
I made this a few years ago. The antenae and the body spin and the wings flap when you twist its crank. It was constructed with several kinds of wire and two needle nose pliers, and a few miscellaneous objects. The wings are removed from a broach, and the body is a spring and a floor nail. There are a couple of small ball bearings involved as well.
Here is the whole thing. It's pretty to have sitting on the mantle.
The crank area...all the motion is powered from here.
That's the body from the back. Hope you like it and wish that you had one! I will be making more soon. I have a contact with a surgeon that hopefully will yield a few spinal fusion cages that I can use for the body of the next ones (those things cost like $2,000). They look really cool.
