Big Dripper

Created by gileshall 2 years ago: "The Big Dripper is a concept based on Harold Edgerton's Piddler. Edgerton's Piddler, also known as a "Time Fountain", uses a stroboscopic light source to highlight individual drops of water in a constant stream of liquid. With the strobe off, the stream looks like a solid cylinder of falling water. With the strobe on, and correctly synchronized with the actuation of the pump, the individual drips of water that compose the stream are exposed. The drips appear to hang in space as if frozen in time. By modulating the phase relationship between the frequency of the pump and the frequency of the strobe, the device can generate optical illusions of motion. For example, the individual drops can appear to fall slowly, or even crawl upwards.

Big Dripper expands on this idea by adding eight individually controllable pumps. By adjusting the phase relationships between the pumps and LEDs, a variety of visual effects can be achieved.

This is the first piece I completed and the first piece I entered in an art show. I loved working on this project.

I was thinking "rainbows" from the start with this project because my son and I both love rainbows and we are currently painting a rainbow with clouds on his bedroom wall. As such, rainbows were foremost on my mind when my ideas began to come together and the project began to take shape.

The bow around the bowl, of course, is the rainbow, and there are clouds on the bottom of the inside of the bowl as well as a soft looking, cloud-like rim around the top of the bowl.

I used Paper Mod Podge and parchment paper to create the bowl from paper mache using a favorite glass bowl of mine as a mould. After applying a release agent, I applied 6 layers of paper mache to the mould, allowing time for each layer to dry completely. I used a different color of parchment paper..."
Read the rest of this post

While last semester I focused mainly on metal I thought this semester I'd broaden my horizons. I decided to dip into stone, glass, wood, wool, and pre-fab materials (am I using pre-fab right?) and just get a taste of a few different things before I tried to settle down. I'm sorry that I never have any in process pics that show you how I do anything but I get too into what I'm doing to stop to get the camera.

Anyway, the first pic up top is a set of granite weapons with glass heads and a glass helmet. Sadly, my school doesn't have the equipment to blow glass so I designed all of the pieces and a very nice glass smith offered to do make them for free if I helped out a little bit. I carved the handles from slabs of granite using my handy-dandy angle grinder and attached the heads to the handles using leather string. I built the pedestal, too. Lol.

The second one up is called "Rock, Paper, Scissors". It's a wooden hand..."
Read the rest of this post

Mostly sheet styrene plastic and cast resin parts. The track plates and wheels were cast resin and lots of old model parts. It's approximately 1/35 scale. It's based on a vehicle described in a book by Basil Copper called "The Great White Space," sort of an H.P. Lovecraft pastiche. I used Humbrol Afrika Korps Desert Yellow and weathered the thing with Gunze Sangyo weathering acrylics and drybrushed off-white PollyS acrylic. The treads were done with Tamiya Steel and a wash of black acrylic and Gunze Sangyo rust. As for how long it took, I suppose it was about a couple of weeks all told; I didn't actually think about it. I was doing it for myself and not on a deadline. I built the body of the vehicle with sharp cornes but glued a thin (1/8 inch) square cross-section styrene strip into the inside of each corner edge so it could be sanded down to a nice rounded edge. A little more work but easier than trying to bend the plastic..."
Read the rest of this post

If you're originally from where we are, the pacific northwest, you generally see orchids as flowers that are blooming and pretty when you by them, but then never bloom again. Here in Florida, you can just set them outside, I guess, and they bloom year after year, no maintenance required. Here is a lovely orange and red variety.

Next is a green tree frog perched gently on a banana leaf. I was surprised how sluggish he was, because after I snapped the photo, I poked him and he didn't even jump away. Probably poisonous.

Then, a purple water lily. Beautiful, but..."
Read the rest of this post
