we bleached the hoodie, but for the record the lion on the back and the weird emblem thing on the front were there to begin with.

Edit 3/20/08: This creation is now for sale on my new Etsy shop: http://Mellonea.Etsy.com.

I created this from old t-shirts, Cut and sewed into panels that would make a skirt! I sewed them onto a white jersey skirt I already had, that had a stain on it, so sizing wasn't an issue, thankfully, the skirt base already fit me. This is the second article of clothing I've ever used a sewing machine to make, and beings that I used no pattern, it took a lot of mock-ups and eyeballing, and "Just trying it" to get it right. I estimate it took me around 11 hours to make. I know that the cutout tool may be corny, but i think it turned out nicely, and helps make iron-ons look more "real" so to speak.
And the crazy painter man, was actually doodled on some looseleaf in history class, and scanned after the fact. (Boy was it annoying removing all those little blue lines!) You may notice the backwards thumb, which was a result of me actually paying attention for a short period of time, and becoming absent-minded of the work. I think it adds character. There was, at one point a really nicely colored version of it, but I managed to lose it during a hard-drive format.

Today, the options were orange, black, red, and blue - I suspect orange might get swapped out as it becomes less seasonal.

I cut out three kite-shaped templates from ordinary printer paper and laid them on the shirt, to verify the rough size and shape. I was pleased with the results, so I proceeded to mix up a 50/50 bleach/water solution and spray it on the shirt.

A few things I didn't think of:

- a black shirt doesn't bleach to grey or white. In this case, it ended up orangey-brown. Not terrible, and I should have known better.

- I made something like 25 ounces of bleach solution. That's a lot. The spray bottle warns you not to store bleach in the spray bottle, as it can corrode metal, so I rinsed out my spray bottle with clean water, and stored my solution for my next few shirts in a canning jar.

Edit 3/20/08 I'm now making /flex shirts for folks, @ http://Mellonea.Etsy.com

/flex is one of my favorite WoW (World of Warcraft) emotes. Often, the programmers made this emote way over-the-top, and funny to watch. It's also rather instantly recognizable in silhouette, which made it a good subject for this shirt.

I read Jesse and Brenda's instructions and saw their bleach shirts, and was so inspired!

After printing and the long and tiring chore of cutting them all out with scissors and X-acto knives, I sprayed the backs of them with Spray Adhesive and let it dry for 15 minutes, so it would form a temporary-only bond with the shirt. By using this method, I hoped to retain some of the finer details of hair, bones, fingers, etc.

And it worked! Oh my, it worked! I didn't even let the shirt dry completely before ripping it out of the..."
Read the rest of this post
